I'll get laughed at but have you considered Dell?

We use dell, acer and fujitsu at work.
Acer have been fine never really many problems just make sure you register your extended warranty if you buy it. If you dont they say "sorry" you didnt register it so tough!. Fujistsu we have had issues with sound not be very powerful on a range of laptops and theres some serious load of gumfphy software thats installed on it, but not had any problems other than that. Dell not had that long, but by all accounts seem fine they are nice to look at when they come out the box. They are normally shiney shiney shiney. So dont expect to use them without covering it with fingerprints !!!
Dell support - India !!
Acer Support - Europe somewhere !!
Fujitsu - Dont know.
You sorta get what you pay for really and its like buying a car. You can have two off the production line and do exactly the same drives, same milage, same petrol, same everything and 1 will enevitably break at different times to the other with different issues. Its just luck really.
Hope that helps

my wife deals with dell at work and she said they are shit, dell support is very bad, infact they dont deal with anymore.

our experiences of Dell at work have been fine, they take a long time to do anything on a call, they are very meticulous. But factor in are you going to require their support being the computer literate chappy that you are

Dell own Alienware so spend £2k on one of those big boys ![]()
I have a 2nd hand Fujitsu Esprimo that I got off Ebay and it has been fine so far.

After care aint something I'm really bothered about tbh aslong as the parts are covered by the warranty I'm cool with as I said all it needs is the basics so thanks for the advice I'll have a look around

tbh just about anything on the market should meet these needs, if your not worried about anything else, get an idea what screen size you want and go for the cheapest one you can find

jools you can build a better pc with better components at a better price than a pre built, anyway its more fun:)

I've built so many, the ones on overclockers look like I'd save a few quid tops for all the hassle of multiple deliveries and then the pain in the arse that is building them.
Come time to get it I think I'll price up all the components and see how much I would actually save ![]()

Yes it is good to build your own but my last upgrade experience involved a faulty power supply and the problem is that with no way of testing what the issue I then had to get a shop to look at and then fit one of their power supplies.
All satisfaction and potential savings totally wiped out.

I've never had much trouble with Dell support... I tend to email them, which I may be mistaken but I thought was run out of Ireland.
I wasn't paying, so I found myself with a long extended warranty, and in that period they replaced probably most of the inside (and some of the outside) of the laptop. Main one being when it had some weird issue with the cooling fan going into overdrive and clattering against the inside of the case (and some other minor issues) - they ended up sending a guy out to replace the fan, the motherboard, the power connector, the top face of the casing, the little rubber feet off the bottom...
And previously they sent out a new CD drive when the old one went bad, also without any hassle.
Self building is easy as hell with a desktop, not so easy with a laptop. Not sure I'd want to go that route myself. For something low-end that just wants to get online and watch some movies I'd take Jops' advice - almost anything will be able to do that, so look for screen size (maybe weight and battery life if such things bother you) set against price.
